Standards and References Update
On November 12, 2007, NICET issued clarifications for what Standards and References may be brought into a NICET Fire Alarm Exam. At this time, all third-party "study guides" are banned and are currently under review. In an effort to help our clients and attendees, we have expanded our offering of NFPA Standards and other approved references. We are now able to offer the NEMA Guides as approved by NICET. Additionally, we are able to provide links to other "free" and paid sites for items that we are not able to economically furnish to our clients and attendees. Please see our "Other Resources" category under our "Store" link.
For Candidates for Levels I & II, our best recommendation at this time is to purchase our "Combination Package #1" which combines MCG’s Basic Package of NFPA 72, NEC with tabs, NFPA 170 – Fire Protection Symbols, and an Ugly’s* reference guide with our Essentials Package which consist of one (1) each of the following:
NFPA 13, Installation of Sprinkler Systems
NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2000 Edition
NFPA 101, Life Safety Code Tabs, 2000 Edition
NFPA 110, Emergency Power Supplies
Fire Alarm Signaling Systems, 2003
International Building Code, 2006
For Candidates for Levels III & IV, you should have the minimum Standards indicated above for Level I & II Candidates, and we do recommend that you purchase the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook and the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering.
Finally, we are able to provide a very basic "Standards Selection Modules" for your use in determining which Standards and References that you will require for Levels I & II and Levels III & IV. These "Modules" are not intended to replace your due diligence in reviewing your selected NICET Elements for which Standards and References are required, but as a tool in sourcing and budgeting. Our modules will not provide references for math, science or communications text books at this time. We are endeavoring to find appropriate solutions for references for those related elements, and hope to add them in the near future. You can download the Standards Selection Modules at no charge by going to MCG's Links page.
We have provided direct links to the pertinent information on the NICET website:
*It is MCG’s understanding that Ugly’s, while not specifically on the approved list, meets the requirements for “other” reference manuals as outlined in the new NICET Exam Guidelines.
